The Highlands Primary class is a mixed age grouping of 3-6 year-old children based on Maria Montessori's philosophy of a multi-age educational society.
The child is greeted warmly by the teachers as they begin their day of lessons and work in areas of Practical Life, Sensorial Studies, Math, Language, Science, Geography, and the Arts. This class consists of 3 years of lessons and preparations for the elementary grade years. Spanish is introduced as the second language.
Giving the child leadership and responsibility within the group creates a living classroom where communication and experiences are highly reflective of how we learn to live together, respect each other, and conduct ourselves to function as a contributing member of society.
There is a "gallant dignity" within children of this age...when they are nurtured, treated gently, and consistently challenged they retain this dignity into adulthood.
We find that children entering our school in our pre-primary program are well-oriented and advanced when rising to this primary level.
