Primary Class
The Highlands Primary class is a mixed age grouping of 3-6
year-old children based on Maria Montessori's philosophy of a
multi-age educational society. The child is greeted warmly by
the teachers as they begin their day of lessons and work in
areas of Practical Life, Sensorial, Math, Language, Science,
Geography, and the Arts. Giving the child leadership and
responsibility in the group creates a living classroom where
communication and experiences are highly reflective of how we
learn to live together, respect each other, and resource
ourselves to function as a contributing member of society.
There is a "gallant dignity" within children of this age... when they are
nurtured, treated gently and consistently challenged they retain
it into adulthood. This class consists of 3 years of
lessons and preparations for the elementary grade years. We
find that children that enter our school in our pre-primary
program are well oriented and advanced when rising to this
primary level. French is taught as second language. Starting
in September 06 Spanish will be taught.
